The suitable blasting abrasive for each application

Blasting abrasives of premium quality in various grain sizes and siftings

Blasting abrasives, also known as media consist of metallic, mineral and organic materials. SIGG Strahltechnik offers blasting abrasives exclusively in premium quality. The company maintains stocks of common blasting abrasives with different characteristics, in various grain sizes and siftings, like blasting corundum, aluminium oxide, glass beads, blasting glass, nut shells, brass powder, nylon granulate, steel-chilled iron grit and ceramic beads.

High-level competence in the selection of blasting advices

The blasting technology specialist sells the media in quantities, whichever the customer desires – from 25 kilograms up to several tons. Customers include companies of all sizes, from craftsmen to large scale corporations. Each blasting abrasive has specific characteristics, which makes it particularly suitable for certain applications. Thus, for example, blasting corundum qualifies for de-scaling, de-rusting, roughening and polishing of steel, non-ferrous metals, glass, wood and plastic. Aluminum oxide, without ferrous constituents, is therefore preferential for the treatment of parts that should not be subject to rusting.

Glass beads for a pure surface

Glass beads feature a fine blasting abrasive for achieving highly polished, pure surfaces. They are preferably used for the cleaning of form-pieces, dies and other work-pieces whereby the surface may not be corroded. They are utilized for matting of medical technology instruments. As pre-treatment before chromium-plating and anodizing, glass beads also present the most suitable blasting abrasive. Glass blasting abrasives by SIGG Strahltechnik are silicone-free, for even smallest constituents prevent anodizing, chromium-plating and painting of blasted surfaces.

Angular glass for roughening stainless steels

Blasting abrasives in angular forms are used for cleaning, matting and roughening of stainless steels and non-ferrous metals. Nut shells present a granulate made from natural raw materials of sensitive characteristics, utilized for cleaning and de-burring of plastic molding parts as well as brass and aluminum machined components. These abrasives de-burr the components due to the contact velocity, without damaging the surfaces. Nylon granulate in cubic form ensures gentle de-burring and cleaning of components made of plastic. Steel-chilled iron grit is preferably suited for polishing, cleaning, matting, de-scaling and roughening. Ceramic beads are the right choice for the surface finishing of components made of stainless steel and aluminum. You are not sure which blasting abrasive is the right one for your surface desired? Then feel free to call or write us, we’ll be pleased to advise you.

Blasting carborundum for dry and wet processing

Blasting carborundum may be used in all injector blasting systems, both for dry and wet blasting, for cleaning steel or gray cast iron, as well as descaling stainless steel. It is also implied in the wood- and plastic processing. Blasting carborundum is derived from high-quality bauxite and its effect relates to its grain size.

White corundum/aluminum oxide for steel blasting

White corundum, also called aluminum oxide, is often used as a blasting abrasive. It is valued by its hardness and resilience, depending on its purity, visible already by its color. The rule of thumb here is: The purer the blasting abrasive, the more brittle it becomes. And even more resilient it gets by the addition of metal oxides and the cooling rate.

Glass beads for sensitive surfaces

Glass beads represent a blasting abrasive of exceptional quality. They get their appearance in blasting systems for cleaning, smoothing or matting sensitive surfaces, and again in the injector blasting cabinets by SIGG. Due to its non-ferrous properties it is most recommended for blasting processes on high-alloyed steel, special steel and non-ferrous metals.

Nutshells (Lignoblast) for gentle processing

Nutshell granulate (Lignoblast) consists of broken, cleaned and sifted walnut shells. This organic blasting abrasive enables gentle cleaning and deburring of plastic injection parts or turned parts made of brass and aluminum. It is employed in the medical technology, electronics and in the vehicle construction. Nutshells are available in batches from 25 kilos.

Nylon granulate deburrs and cleans efficiently

Nylon granulate is a cubic shaped granulate composed of plastic and abrasive bodies, utilized for efficient deburring or cleaning of workpieces. Particularly surfaces of plastic components are processed this way. Nylon granulate is available in batches from 25 kilos and required by companies in medical technology, electronics and vehicle manufacturing.

Ceramic beads improve the density

A perfect surface finishing of stainless steel, titan or aluminum components is achieved by means of blasting with ceramic beads. This process goes easy on surfaces despite the fact that ceramic beads have a higher blasting velocity compared to glass beads. The surface condensation improves just as well. Ceramic beads are often used in medical technology.

Brass powder: Very low in consumption and dust

In order to keep surfaces of brass shiny they are blasted with brass powder. This high-quality blasting abrasive, low in consumption and dust, is preferentially used for blasting processes of watches or jewelry, but also parts from the automotive industry, medical technology or electronics are processed this way. SIGG delivers brass powder in batches from 25 kilos

Steel iron grit for the hard jobs

Steel iron grit is won from mechanical crushing of large, spherical steel or chilled iron particles. The material obtained therefore consists mostly of sharp-edged grit. It is very hard and excels in maintaining its angular shape even after numerous blasting processes, available in batches from 25 kilos.
