Deburring by blasting for precise surfaces

When millimetres matter, burrs must be removed cleanly

Highest precision is needed in medical technology. In particular small parts such as stents must meet high standards of quality. The grid tubes made of metal, metal alloys or other materials such as polymers or magnesium are inserted into vessels to support them and keep them open. Deburring by blasting gives the stents a clean surface that is as even as possible to prevent micro-injuries to the body's tissues that may cause inflammation.

Stent production of different materials

Modern stents are made, e.g., of nickel-titanium alloys – in short: NiTi. The material is very elastic and corrosion-resistant. The stents can be laser-cut from tiny NiTi-tubes, for example. This may lead to formation of burrs that are reliably removed through deburring by blasting. After deburring by blasting, the manufacturer cleans the stents with selected liquids in order to produce hygienic, medically impeccable products. Polymer stents are also carefully deburred by blasting to prepare them for the next production stages. Polymer stents are used to support vessels for a limited period of time. The material is made to dissolve slowly in the body.

Deburring by blasting is an efficient and low-priced solution even for small parts. The best procedure and blasting agent depends on your material and the desired result. Our experts will gladly advise you and supply blast samples to get the best blasting result for you.

Mechanical deburring with blasting technology is suitable for a wide range of workpieces. Depending on the size of the part, different blasting systems can be used for deburring. Fine, loose and light burrs especially can be reliably removed using blasting technology. Deburring with blasting technology is suitable for screws and gears in the watch industry as well as for machine components.

Deburring with blasting technology ensures that parts are given a particularly clean and even surface. Especially in industries where precision and high standards of cleanliness are important, deburring is carried out using blasting technology. For example, manufacturers of stents for medical technology use deburring with blasting technology to obtain clean and safe products. The process is also used in the watch and jewellery industry and ensures even, smooth and clean surfaces.

Deburring with blasting technology is particularly efficient and economical, because even small parts can be deburred in high quality with little effort. To make deburring particularly economical, the experts at SIGG Strahltechnik select the blasting system specifically for the application in question. Small parts are therefore processed efficiently in rotary basket systems, while carousel systems are ideal for parts with a diameter of 150 millimetres and a height of up to 400 millimetres.

The choice of the appropriate blasting agent depends on the blasting process and the workpiece to be deburred. A few examples:

• White corundum for deburring in medical technology and of non-ferrous metals
• Nut shells for deburring plastic injection moulded parts or parts made of brass and aluminium
• Nylon granules for removing light burrs from plastic parts
• Steel shot for deburring steel or cast aluminium parts

SIGG experts advise on the selection of the appropriate blasting medium and, if required, blast sample parts in our own test laboratory.
