Ceramic Balls for Shot Peening and Surface Finish

Ideal for pressure-blasting systems, injector-blasting systems and wet blasting

Ceramic balls are the right choice for particularly high demands to surface processing. The balls have very smooth and homogeneous surfaces, smoothing the workpieces treated with them particularly well. Ceramic balls are suitable for:

  • Lapping effects
  • Fine blasting
  • Silk-gloss effects

"Lapping" generally describes blasting with balls of hard-elastic silicate glass. Lapping often is used to smooth the surface after mechanical processing. Ceramic balls can also be used to achieve smooth, metal-gloss surfaces.

Smoothing and polishing blasting of workpieces

The surfaces of the workpiece are levelled for the surface finish in smoothing; surface roughnesses are removed by the impact of the ceramic balls. The blasting agents and blasting system are chosen based on the hardness and structure of the surface. The balls can be used with pressure blasting systems, injector blasting systems or for wet blasting.

Shot-peening, i.e. blasting for strengthening, can also use ceramic balls. Generally, a spherical blasting agent is targeted at the surface in this procedure in order to put as much energy as possible onto the workpiece surface in the form of residual compressive stress. Fine adjustment of the surface and grain mass is vital to harden the surface without causing deformation that would cause the residual compressive stress to drop. The high quality of SIGG ceramic balls avoids grain break and keeps the shot-peening result very clean.
