Matting by Blasting Creates Visual Effects

Precise lines and preserving processing are possible.

Matting is a special application of coarse blasting, using finer blasting agents adjusted to the degree of matting. Matting is mostly used for visual purposes or to create functional surfaces. Matting with fine blasting media produces particularly homogeneous and therefore finely shimmering surfaces. Surfaces can be finely roughened with edgy blasting agents. In particular blasting methods using compressed air are used for matting, since adjustment of the compressed air supply permits particularly good coordination of the jet. Precise lines can be applied to surfaces to create precise separations between matted and glossy areas.

Matting – what does that mean?

Surfaces reflect light more or less strongly. The human eye perceives this as gloss. Very smooth surfaces reflect light almost as completely as mirrors. The rougher a surface, the more diffuse the reflexion – the visual impression is a matte one. Similar to the colour effect, matte surfaces are perceived differently by each observer. Reflectometers are used to make matting measurable. The physical definition of matte or glossy effects is the quotient of the shares of directed and diffuse reflection of the light stream hitting the surface.
